T-Shirt Wear

11/14/09

What an array of eclectic bits from former lives --

Rhinestone tassels, and 1950's fancy crystal necklace links, old drop earrings and breathtaking blown glass opalescent heart.  A knock Weiss earring and an antiquated pale aqua flower cap.

All suspended from verdi-gris crystal.

How gorgeous with your favorite t-shirt?

Barefoot and Beautiful

11/13/09

Jasmine and Mike were married ON THE BEACH this past summer  -- AND IT WAS GORGEOUS!!!

The photos were magnificent -- it was truly a DREAM COME TRUE ceremony.

I had the best time looking with Jasmine and her Mom, Jean (Hi Jean!) for just the right brooch to turn into her wedding necklace.  And indeed we found it and it was PERFECT!

And when worn by such a beautiful girl -- well, as you can see, it was downright STUNNING!!

I couldn't have been more honored than to have my part in this beautiful wedding and this love filled family.

They've been Anthill friends for a long time and I think the world of them.

Congratulations Jasmine and Mike!!

You are going to have a wonderful life.  :)

Horsin' Around Allowed

11/12/09

Whoever invented the phrase, "No Horsing Around,"

1) missed out on some good times
2) never made Kay necklaces

I like horsing around, and so I have a made horses for around your neck.

A nostalgic collection of former pins and and tie tacs, including two hand carved wooden pieces, a "show pony" lapel pin, and charms of a saddle, a boot and a riding crop charm.

Each element removable for individual wear and suspended from vintage baby pearl rosary chain.

Among the Vets . . .

11/11/09

To all Veterans,

Thank you for serving our country.

"Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die." ~ G.K. Chesterton

Pop, I cherish your Navy stories. It's amazing how you saved the USS Oakhill from sinking by plugging the hole with a mattress.

It's also amazing that I believed you for so many years.

Uncle Will -- we miss you immensely and are honoring you and all your veteran brothers today.

My father, Wiley, on the right and his twin brother, my late Uncle Will, on the left.
Ship's Chaplains on the USS Oakhill during the Korean War from 1954 to 1958.

It's About Hope

11/10/09

As long as we have hope,
we have direction,
the energy to move,
and the map to move by.

We have a hundred alternatives,
a thousand paths and an infinity of dreams.

Hopeful, we are halfway
to where we want to go;
Hopeless, we are lost forever.

Life on the GO!!

11/07/09

Kathy KNOWS how to MULTI-TASK!

I love those TCB types -- so completely opposite of me -- I ENVY them.

And when Kathy and her friend Mary came into Anthill a little while back, we had a FUN time -- a LIVELY duo they are!!

They are both CAbi consultants -- you know, where DESIGNER CLOTHING comes to YOU  -- at YOUR house!  If you've never heard about it, you should!!  And get Kathy or Mary to host your clothing party -- YOU WON'T BE SORRY -- and YOU WILL BE ENTERTAINED!!

Kathy picked out the coolest Kay necklace which had an old logo chandelier crystal in the middle and two *empty* vintage watch cases on each side of it.  Kathy's a rivah girl, and I told her to bring me some rivah sand and I'd fill the watch cases up with sand and pebbles from

 the place her and her family love to go.  So that we did!  Now her necklace isn't only nostalgic and unique -- it's completely meaningful TO HER!  Love it!!

In this photo, I told her just to glop it on with her own beads and just watch the collage magic happen.  So that she did!!

Three cheers for Kathy and Mary too!

ROYAL BLING

11/05/09

I am completely overjoyed to have a very special collector who is a member of a notable Royal Family and whose passion for my jewelry sends my creativity into overdrive.

She has quite a collection of Kay pieces, and the photo above was one of her first orders that I captured in a collective shot before I packed and shipped it far away.

She has since gotten more elaborate designs that I will showcase and blog on in the future. And I continue to teem with new ideas to show her -- all  I need is more hours in the day!!

It has truly been a pleasure to create such opulent pieces.   I respect immensely the lost art of vintage jewelry and couldn't be more grateful than when a collector feels the same such passion for jewelry created from these antiquated treasures.

How do you do it?

Why don't you let the rest of us in on your secret so that we can look as good . . .

What??? What's that you're clairvoyant-ing to me?  It's the necklace???

Well there you go -- Kay necklaces are the secret to the good-looking fountain of youth.  WORKS FOR ME!!!  (Or, wait -- I think I work for it . . . )

All joking aside -- well some of the joking aside -- this is Justine Parker, and I've blogged on her beautiful self before because she owns 923 Kay necklaces -- oh ---- goodness, wait . . . that's how many I WISH she owned.

But she does have several, and allow me to remind you that this gorgeous lady is a singer in a Richmond band call the The Escorts Band

THEY ARE GOOD!!!!  They play everything from “All Shook Up” and “Great Balls of Fire” to the B-52’s “Love Shack” -- and YOU KNOW that'll keep 'em on the dance floor!! So check them out and give them a call next time you need some music at your event.

And now that Justine has given us the secret, you can come see me for the good-looking fountain of youth!! :-)

This piece was once offered in Willy Wonka's gift shop.

It's been said that Violet Beauregard and Veruca Salt had words over who should buy it, because they both thought it was made of magic candy.

The always astute Charlie Bucket informed them that it wasn't made of candy, but it was possible it was magic!

The girls though about it long and hard, but ultimately didn't "bite" --

I dunno, but rumor has it that an Everlasting Gobstopper lover bought it and ended up having a magically good time wearing it!

Voice of the Elements

10/26/09

If I thought I could find enough customers like Julie, all I would make is eccentric, over-the-top, envelope pushers like this one I called "Coyote Crossing."

Julie looks amazing in it, and it's unique, off-the-wall quality suits her to a tee.

Jim Stafford's Dream Girl?

10/21/09

Hey Mr. Stafford --

I DO like spiders and snakes.

Regarding the spider -- he's an awesome handmade antique. He was the decoration off of a late 1800's/early 1900's silver keepsake box --rare and FABULOUS!

I had to seal the spokes of his web armature very strategically so he wouldn't poke -- they were very sharp. He's sterling silver, and his web is spun silver --a  very significant and special part of the creation!

The other significant piece was probably a showgirl dress buckle from the 1920's/30's.  Oh la la!

Now maybe you'd reconsider your affinity for spiders too?  And I'll see if I can change your mind on snakes one day . . . in fact, such a creation is already in the works!  Then we can ALL be Jim's dream girls! :)

Shhhh . . .

10/19/09

Don't alert the paparazzi . . .

Does anyone remember when I blogged on Charlie's Angels shopping in Anthill? (You can click here for a refresher).

Well, yes, yet another of the angels sauntered into Anthill the other day -- Kate Jackson.

She's going by the name Linda these days . . it keeps the paparazzi better at bay.

And on this day it was time to add a couple of necklaces to this angel's original Kay piece so as have the necessary jewelry bling for creating a sumptious fall jewelry collage!

So that's just what we did! Linda (shhhh . . . Kate) got a classic multi-element rhinestone design along with a distressed copper flower beauty, both of which can be grouped, stacked, layered and glopped with her original retro pearly white lucites necklace for more necklace fun than a barrel of bling from Bailey Banks and Biddle!

So now the possibilities are endless!!! Endless possibilities -- my kinda thinking!!

Always fun to see your beeming smile, Linda. Come by anytime and we'll play in the jOoLs again!!

YOU ARE TRULY AN ARTIST...I stumbled upon your gorgeousity online and I just wanted to let you know that as a little girl who was a bit rowdy and dressed like a pirate most of the time I DREAMED of wearing jewels like those you are creating. I have bookmarked your website in my folder under "sad days" which is a collection of websites that make me particularly happy when I've got a bit of blue...you are truly an artist in the essence of meaning...looking at something, seeing something else and projecting that onto the worlds of others, so they may see it as well. Think Serious Pink

10/14/09

A lovely friend is having a rough go with breast cancer.

Breast cancer claimed my high school friend, Peaches, when she was only 36.

My mother has survived breast cancer.

Our dear friend Nancy is currently in remission from breast cancer.

My friend Betty has been breast cancer free for over 5 years.

My grandmother died from breast cancer.

Please Think Pink.

The above necklace is available for making a $100 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which I will match.

If you are a survivor, and interested in spreading awareness through this artfully interpreted conversation-starting necklace (made from former Avon pink enamel ribbon lapel pins, vintage pink venetian beads and a 1950's crocheted toilet-seat-cover rose), please contact me.  Together our efforts can help in a small way towards one day eradicating this entirely too rampant disease.

Godspeed Lisa. We are all thinking of you. ♥
And thank you Kim for keeping us all aware.  You are a remarkable friend.

Bridal Bliss

10/13/09

This gorgeous bride was married last March in a spectacularly beautiful wedding ceremony.

The pictures were outstanding, and I wish I could show them all right here on this blog.

I know you just celebrated your 6 month anniversary!  Happy Anniversary, Katie!!

Katie and her beautiful sister Lauren, her maid-of-honor, are so vibrant and joyful to be around, and I wish they lived closer to Anthill so they could stop by more often!

I was overjoyed to do the jewels for her bridal party.  Each bridesmaid and the sweet flower girl got an antique rhinestone piece specifically selected for them by Katie, which was in turn transformed into custom necklaces for her girls, complete with tags bearing their names.  It was a delight!

Katie and Lauren, you are beautiful girls. I hope to see you both soon, and your Mom too.

And btw, Lauren, I would love to do the necklaces for your wedding one day!!  . . . I'm just sayin' . . .  :-)

Seahorse Harmony

10/12/09

Do you have a shell nearby?

No matter how far away from the ocean you are, you can  hold a seashell up to your ear and hear the waves softly rolling onto the shore.

Perhaps if you are very quiet, you will be able to hear the gentle swish of a peacefully floating seahorse.

An ocean melody of seahorse harmony.

No shell?

Then this is what the sound looks like.

When I Grow Up

10/11/09

When I grow up, I want to be just like Elizabeth.

Completely full of SPUNK and PERSONALITY -- with Elizabeth age is not a factor -- embracing LIFE IS!!!

She always looks awesome in her Kay pieces (even if I can't take a focused picture), and this was her latest for her birthday!!!

And might I mention that Elizabeth has ONE TALENTED DAUGHTER, Carla, who does with fabric the same kind of thing I do with jewels -- TRANSFORMS THEM INTO MAGIC!

I have to share with you a blurb from a site that sells Carla's doll and children's patterns that she creates:

"Carla Hegeman Crim, aka the 'Scientific Seamstress' is a molecular biologist turned mom and patternmaker. Her eBooks are written in a clear, logical manner with extreme attention to detail…just like science protocols!"

Yes, her daughter has a PhD in Molecular Biology, but it is so lucky for the sewing world that she found her life's second calling PhD'ing the sewing machine.  CHECK HER OUT!!!

You know I always love seeing you Elizabeth.  Thank you so much for being a fan of my work.  Your zest for life, not unlike that of my mom's, completely inspires me!!

I'm Going Back Someday

10/09/09

An art form of the Netherlands -- delftware -- is named after the town known as Delft from where this type of fired pottery was often made.

Customarily blue white with scenes often depicting windmills and sailboats and peaceful countryside chalets.

I remember distinctly a little fishing village called Volendam and this vintage brooch turned into a necklace does make me pine to be back there.

Holland's countryside is magical -- the lost charm of a bucolic old world.

Ms. Ronstandt wasn't talking about Delft or Volendam when she sung about the Blue Bayou, but goodness knows she could have been.

How happy I'd be

Q-TAY!

09/30/09

This Tucker Tiger HAS SPIRIT!!

Everytime she comes into the shop I'm 17 again.

She's always excited and happy and ready to create!
(Like me -- only I'm obviously light years from 17, dang it!!)

She loves her jewels, she knows her style and she can make visions happen.

See, recently she has gotten into designing her own necklaces at Anthill right on the spot.

She chooses a necklace chain, then she picks out little treasures -- a key, a tiebar, a scrabble tile, a crystal, a locket, etc. and we string these nostalgic bits and pieces into a custom, made-for-Rachael-masterpiece just like you would do "build-a-bear" -- only we've done "build-a-necklace".

Now call me biased, but I'd build jewels over bears anyday!!  In this photo Rachael's wearing a multi-chain extravaganza that she knew she had to have the moment she laid her eyes on it. And truly -- Rachael knows when it's right!

I've got visions of a drama necklace, Rachael -- stay tuned!!

And you keep on keeping me young, and I'll keep on keeping you be-jeweled! :))

Snow White and the Warped Dwarfs

09/23/09

A short TALL tale:

Once upon a time, Snow White, Happy and Doc got separated from the rest of the dwarfs on a trip to Disney World.

So they made the best of it and hooked up with a clown, a mouse, a cowboy, and an Alpine skier.

Snow White and her friends rented a carriage and went on an extended laugh-filled ride through the park.  Later, the clown, the mouse, the cowboy and the Alpine skier all went to a bar.

They officially proclaimed themselves friends at the end of the day.

One day Snow White called me up and asked could I make a necklace that could somehow commemorate that special day.

"I just happen to have a bag of magic," I told her.  My magic included some old lapel pins and vintage tie tacs that happened to EXACTLY match Snow White's wishes -- uncanny!

It was a hit!!! -- Snow White gushed, I blushed, Happy laughed and Doc fainted!

(oh -- and the clown, the mouse, the cowboy and the skier went back to the bar and ended up celebrating with a priest, a rabbi and a minister).

The end.

Margie's got quite a few Kay pieces and she lights up with a smile as big as her whole-self when she stops by.  She's always got great travel stories, cool news about her three college kids and the most thoughtful husband.  One time he stopped by unbeknownst to her and surprised her with an additional necklace for when they got back home.

If you're from NY and see Margie shopping around Manhattan -- stop and give her a BIG CITY HUG from me.  I miss her between visits -- and when her son graduates U of R, I'm gonna have Margie withdrawals.

Unicorns Hide in My Lockets

09/17/09

It was so weird.

I opened up these old lockets the other day, and unicorns just came leaping out of them.

It was strange . . . and I liked it!

Actually, what we have here are lockets, opened at their hinges, drilled thru top and bottom, and from which a collection of former unicorn lapel pins and pendants frolic about.

Little aurora borealis crystals twinkle about for a uniquely mystical good time.

Designing Art Right On Your Neck!

09/13/09

Cell phone photos are not always the most reliable.

But adorable Beth's style and warmth shines through even so.

I do wish the photo was clearer, because she has on the MOST GORGEOUS STACK ATTACK COLLAGE you can IMAGINE!!

She's got three very different, very beautiful necklaces all layered up at different lengths and the art that evolves is just MAGICAL.

It's like designing art in real time right on your neck!

Her pieces include an English porcelain floral collection necklace, a rhinestone on sea-green opal necklace, and a Victorian and Navajo filigree necklace on faceted turquoise.

IRRESISTIBLE!

Blinding Wisdom

09/11/09

If I knew it was the last time we would all be together...
If I knew it was the last time for the smiles and the laughter...
If I knew it was the last time to look into your eyes...
If I knew it was the last time to stand by your side..

I would have talked longer, smiled wider, laughed louder,
looked deeper and held you for an eternity.

Sylvia's Whisper

09/09/09

The lovely lady who bought this necklace came into Anthill today.

There was something about this necklace that you couldn't put your finger on, but it was -- and still is -- just beguiling.

I'm sorry I missed you Sylvia.  Teresa said you looked absolutely radiant.  You ALWAYS do.

Your visit got me to thinking about special you and this wonderful necklace. So I've officially named it after you -- Sylvia's Whisper -- not that you whisper -- in fact your laugh is down right robust and infectious-- but the necklace looks "whispery."

Hey -- but you just tell me if you want it to be named "Sylvia's Contagiously Robust and Fabulous Laugh," and I will rewrite blog-title history!

Aging Gracefully

09/03/09

There are lots of tricks and techniques to make something appear older than it is --

All types of chemicals to give bronzed and vintage patinas.

Crackle finishes -- bury it in the backyard for a year -- heat it, paint it, stain it, etc.

But nothing, absolutely nothing, can compare to good old fashion time.

Although the camera hasn't captured it, there is the most delicate and sparkling little rim of old rhinestones on the inside of the oval and the oldest most time-worn old faux seed pearls on the outer rim.

Suspended from beautifully worn rosary pearls.

It is a treasure.

~~~ Thread-oh Meadow ~~~
08/28/09
A MEADOW OF . . . MOLDED THREAD??
Indeed, that is what we have here.
A necklace whose bibbed base is a mass of tangled threads -- yes, I'm so obsessed, I collect thread scraps in their own drawer, aptly titled, "thread scraps."
These salvaged scraps were dipped in sculpting paste and hardeners, then hand-molded and formed.
It was then drilled through to wire in the vintage flower bursts and enamel butterfly and the little dingle dangles that adorn it throughout.
I do believe they call this kind of art a labor of love.
Beauty? Check! Brains? Check!
08/12/09
If these two aren't the cutest I've ever seen, I don't know who might be.
Becca and her friend Sophie are classmates and both really love vintage jewelry.
I think it is so awesome when young people have an appreciation for the older jewelry -- something not only beautiful, but that has some history and significance.
It's such of world of instant gratification, wear it once and let it fall apart. Planned obsolescence -- 'cause there's two million more where "that" came from.
Not with vintage -- and these girls know that.
They'll learn more, they'll always have loads of fun treasure hunting, and they'll have a style ALL THEIR OWN --
So . . . how smart -- AND CUTE -- are they?!!! :)
Carved Razor Blades?
08/10/09
Rhinestone-studded dressclip backs.
Cool.
They almost look like carved razor-blades to me.
Some are so much like little works of art -- and often engraved works of art -- it's a shame they were on the backside of the beautiful and elaborate rhinestone fur clips and dressclips from which they came.
All their sharp little gripper prongs (cleats) have been ground smooth, so you will have poke-free enjoyment.
I'm just glad they are so pretty . . . and unique . . . and odd . . . and edgy . . . and cool, because this necklace exists as a result of that completely unique beauty.
Gorgeous Guilloche
08/07/09
5 vintage lockets. All handpainted. All on guilloche enamel.
Guilloche is a technique for etching metal, named after a French engineer, Guillot.
He invented a machine that could scratch fine patterns and designs on metallic surfaces.
Thus when powdered glass is placed on top of an etched (guilloched) design and fired -- turning it into enamel -- the pattern from underneath shows through.
We have had some INCREDIBLE examples of it at Anthill over the years -- it can be a breathtaking art form.
And so it is here. Soft, romantic and and quite simply lovely.
Denise Richards in Anthill?
Ok -- Marjorie is gonna kill me for that title, but I SWEAR she looks like Denise Richards.
If she wanted a second career, she could go to Hollywood and be her stand-in.
But she doesn't need to do that -- she's got too good a gig here.
She's the brains and webmaster behind the highly regarded website that lists historic properties (translation -- often mansions) for sale from all over the world.
Her site's testimonial page is staggering. Old home buffs don't know where they'd be without her.
And did I happen to mention she's got AMAZING taste in necklaces?
Here's a FANTASTIC all sterling number she got some time ago.
Got Chocolate? Really, do You?
07/09/09
Because I need some.
I am craving chocolate. So I needed to placate myself by choosing a necklace to blog on that reminded me as much of Hershey's Special Dark with Almonds as possible.
This necklace is the winner.
Now, if I could only eat it. (I don't have any chocolate in the house, and I don't feel like going out).
Silly blog.
Pretty necklace.
Earth Angels
07/02/09
This is my girl Kim Schmidt.
In fact she's the city's girl. EVERYBODY adores Kim.
She has one of the kindest souls and spirits I have ever, EVER encountered.
I've been known to call her "DB" -- short for day-brightener, earth angel, Mother Teresa's daughter -- you get the picture.
Well, Kim's good friend Lisa has been going through breast cancer, and it's been a rough haul. And Kim has been there for her every step of the way.
Among so many other things, Kim is a excellent photographer and she's been doing many tribute and awareness photos on flickr in honor of Lisa.
Well, to thank her, Lisa knew Kim liked this necklace and called me unbeknownst to Kim and had me present it to her with a heartwarming thank you note.
Kim was clearly, clearly moved.
Kim and Lisa -- you are amazing peeps.
The world needs more like you.
Love you both.
King Tut's Glow
06/29/09
I've never been to Egypt.
One day I'd like to go.
Until then, this rhinestone pyramid is my vicarious visit.
Such an exotic and unusual piece. I've seen literally 1000's of brooches through the years owning an antique shop that specializes in jewelry, and NEVER have I seen a piece anything like this.
I think whoever buys this should go to Egypt and visit King Tut's tomb.
I don't know that he'd turnover, but I bet he'd give a mummy nod of approval!
Twist & TuRN!
06/26/09
When I look at this necklace, I always think of Pat Benatar's song "The Good Life" from her jazz and blues album, released back in 1991. (Egads!!)
It's got a great throw-back tune and is so good-mood setting.
There's a line from the song in particular that makes me think of this necklace . . .
"Now people like to have their fun, bend their knees in twist and turns. Talk on, about the Good Life."
When I hear this one line, this necklace, with it's twisting and turning components, is instantly in my mind's eye.
Here's a link to this great song, 'cause if you've never heard it, you simply must!!
RICOLA!
06/23/09
What a fantastic, eclectic sense of style.
Beautiful Connie came into Anthill the other day and instantly eyed the Kay pieces.
She seemed especially drawn to the ones with unexpected collections of like items.
She came close to getting a tiebar collage, but when it was said and done, this Alpine collage was the winner.
I told her how I had to collect these over a period of about three year to have enough to pull off the design aesthetically.
Then she liked it even better!
These are souvenir pins and hat pins that were often sold to tourists in Germany and Switzerland.
The designs usually include a pickaxe and sometimes rope -- for rock and mountain climbing (in the Alps, you know!!).
Sometimes the pins will have the edelweiss flower represented -- a national flower used in Austria, Hungary, Switzerland and Germany!
Also seen are the famous style Alpine hats, sometimes a Swiss cowbell, sometimes the country's flag.
They all have a similar feel, but each is unique in it's motif and personality.
It's so awesome that collaging them together can bring appreciation to their story, their detail, and their heritage!
Not to mention that it looks so freekin' cool!!!
When Bonnie Met Clyde
06/22/09
Love at first gun-slinging site -- or is it??
Looks like maybe they're already having their first lover's showdown.
A salvaged portion of antique french ivory (celluloid) pendant has been drilled and riveted to a sunset-hued scallop.
And we can clearly see Clyde is sporting his prerequisite handgun.
It would appear undaunted Bonnie is giving Clyde lip.
I wonder could they patch things up and re-write history?? . . .
Father's Day
06/21/09
I love you Pop.
I miss Uncle Will, and I can't imagine how much you do.
But rest assured, he's looking down and from above and having a laugh. He's up there playing his best pranks and telling his best jokes and I think the thunder we hear these days, could be God himself roaring with laughter.
You will always be the twin brother country preachers.
You will always be the musicians.
The antics and the stories and the non-stop humor. The lessons. The vacations. The love. The laughs.
You were the last born of 13 children.
You are the last one here.
All your sisters and brothers, Masue and your Father watch over you everyday.
And how they love you.
Happy Father's Day, Pop.
Happy Father's Day, Uncle Will.
And how I love you.
Prettiest Ever?
06/21/09
Call me biased, but I think this turned out to be one of the prettiest pieces ever!
Old Chanel screwback earring blanks were "crowned" with intense miniature Swarovski rhinestone flowers, which were also sprinkled about with other delicate antique rhinestone earrings in this three tier dazzler.
For versatility, and is customary with my pieces, each tier removes for independent wear.
So you can go as casually striking to as STRIKING striking as you want!
Magical Discord
06/19/09
The finishes on each of these buckles are all so different . . .
From darkened to bright, they each delt with the passing of time their own way.
The shapes of these buckles are all so different . . .
We see two circles, a small one and a large one. There is a "half" rectangle and a full rectangle. There is the standout figure 8.
The condition of the rhinestones on these buckles are all so different . . .
From mellow to bright, and from aged to gleaming, each deals with the refraction of light a little different from the other.
So how is it that in this discord of finishes, shapes, sizes and conditions, this necklace can be so beautiful?
The unity is that they are all buckles, each unique, each redeeming in its own way.
And that makes the discord MAGIC!
It's not unlike your family, or mine.
Know what I mean?
Butter Anyone?
06/11/09
I made this so you could go to your favorite restaurant, butter your bread, then put your necklace back on . . .
You know -- for life's weak dieting moments.
Thick, solid, GORGEOUS mother of pearl handles (thickest I've ever encountered on vintage flatware) are enhanced by signed embossed sterling silver wraps that serve as a cuff between the blade and the handle.
The blades themselves are (tempered??) steel, and they made me painfully aware of that fact as I broke a good half dozen bits trying to pierce them.
Hanging from the knives are two beautifully detailed carved mother-of-pearl former brooches from Israel.
Boobies, Fashion & Awareness
06/10/09
Meet my great friends Phil, Nancy and Katie.
They have been Anthillians as far back as I can remember, and they are the kindest and most lively family you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting.
Nancy is a recent breast cancer survivor, as are several other of our wonderful customers, AND my mother as well.
So, in honor of breast cancer awareness, I have made two necklaces in which half of the proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research.
Now let me tell you -- it wasn't easy coming up with a concept to make boobies out of vintage jewelry "stuffs," but I think somehow I've managed to pull it off.
The first one here is apparently modeled after my own cup size, or so my husband informed me after I completed it.
It's my personal take on the "pink ribbon," which are, in my vision, silver bows with pearls and pink venetian glass beads. Then delicate Swarovski screw-back earring bezels have been turned into graceful little pairs of boobies, also suspended from the pretty hand blown glass beads.
Actually quite attractive on, and very subliminal in it's message, although it is intended to create breast cancer awareness chatter.
So do just that -- with style and grace and pride.
YOU ARE A SURVIVOR!
Signed Kay Adams, A1449
Lux Collection, $195, (donated to Cure by Design 2009)
The second one is clearly not a boob size I'm directly familiar with.
It is made from the rose of a crocheted toilet seat cover from the 1950's, and several of Avon pink awareness ribbons (former lapel pins) that have been in circulation for quite a few years now.
It's dynamic and not as subliminal in it's message as the former.
Spread the awareness with an openness and wacky bit of humor, if that's your style!
Blame It On The Rain
06/04/09
In Richmond, Virginia, it POURED down rain yesterday evening!
It was beautiful! And LOUD! Thunder and Lightning . . . .
POURED --like a squall line -- one thunderstorm after the other.
Right about blog time, I lost power (and it stayed off 10 hours) and thus I couldn't blog yesterday.
But the exciting storms were worth it!
So today, I resume my normal blogging, and couldn't resist to blog on this completely unique rain-like assemblage.
It's like the beauty of a storm permanently captured as rain cascades down from this necklace, giving a renewed vitality to the flora, represented by the gentle enamel leaves.
HI NANCY!!
06/02/09
Ok -- cute little Nancy here has a GREAT sense of style -- always chic, always timeless, always sophisticated.
In essence, she knows when it's right.
She picked this beauty out the other day and MY OH MY, is it an AWESOME one!
It has some of the coolest -- AND RAREST -- elements I've ever worked with.
These elements include two antique charge coins.
Yes, before plastic American Express and Visa cards, at the high end shops, you were issued a beautifully designed and embossed medallion, with a hand engraved number unique to you -- the customer.
They are very hard to find and usually BEAUTIFULLY detailed. One of hers is from historical Strawbridge and Clothier, founded in 1862.
Other pieces on her necklace include a Rolex spoon bowl, which I removed from the spoon handle of course, an antique European spoon head, a Miraculous medal (Medal of the Immaculate Conception), and the main element from a vintage hand-engraved WWI sweetheart bracelet , and an antique Italian coin medal.
Quite a collection!!
Nancy KNOWS how to pick 'em!! (just like the husband she picked -- what a nice man -- AND, he bought her another for her birthday!)
I told him he made quite a few women happy that day! :))
Hey, btw -- look how Nancy's got the Kay necklace blended with her own chains. Such a GREAT LOOK! I SOOO encourage stacking and layering other pieces from you own jewelry wardrobe to make AMAZING collages right on your neck!!
THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!~
And then you can still wear the funky clear crystal chain.
And you can put the 1940's carnival glass beads (center of each lucite ring) on your miniature Christmas tree as the cutest antique ornaments ever.
Ok -- so I've got ya covered.
Growing Cameos in My Poppies
05/31/09
I LOVE THIS PIECE! (that's a BIG surprise, huh?)
It's odd and COLORFUL and INTENSE.
It's soft and JOLTING all at the same time.
It's a proverbial study in contrasts and opposites.
I restored the old enamel poppy and made the circular pearl framed cameo.
There is a gracefully pale cameo trailing down from the poppy, along with peridot and amethyst stones. There's pearls and dangling green aurora borealis rhinestones tucked about.
And it all hangs from a menagerie of tumbled jades and green venetian glass.
What nice way to close out May!
P.S . -- I HIGHLY recommend growing some cameos in your summer garden!
